I had been right. Sleep was elusive. I tossed and turned for hours before finally dozing off.
Expecting desert, I was surprised to find myself in a grassy, moonlit field—not unlike the one behind the training academy.
For a moment, I simply stood there, gazing up at the moon—until a soft noise told me I wasn’t alone. Glancing over, I saw an enormous wolf standing a few feet away.
Most people would probably find a dream like this frightening. At one time, it would have terrified me, but now, it filled me with conflicting emotions I couldn’t begin to sort out.
The wolf’s golden eyes met mine and he wagged his tail.
“All right,” I agreed. “Let’s do this.” Then I would return the glyph and never see him again—just as I always wanted. What bothered me was that I wasn’t so certain I truly wanted that.
I gave myself over to the change—an experience that had become as natural as breathing. An instant later, I stood on four paws in the dewy grass. Yes, this was the spirit realm, but that didn’t make it any less real. In some ways, it was more real than the everyday world in which I lived.
The wolf studied me a moment, then turned and headed for the trees, leaving me to hurry after him.
He disappeared into the shadows, and I slowed my pace as I spied the underbrush. No need to rush headlong into that thicket. Trotting into the foliage, I found my surroundings eerily familiar. I wasn’t sure how I knew, but this was the same thicket I’d traversed with Xol all those years ago.
Xol waited just ahead and started forward once he saw that I had joined him. We wove our way through the tangle of branches until a path opened ahead, the sky beyond that swirly silver and black I remembered from the last time I was here.
I followed Xol though the opening and stepped out as human—just as I had the last time.
Xol stood a few feet away, looking amused, but that wasn’t why I stumbled to a stop.
“I still can’t get over that you can take human form here,” he said.
“Me? What are you wearing?” I stared at him. He looked like one of those guys in a Day of the Dead parade. He was dressed in full Aztec regalia, including the feathered headdress.
“This is the land of my ancestors.”
Concerned, I glanced down at myself. I wore a pair of shorts and a T-shirt advertising my dog-training academy.
“This isn’t the land of your ancestors,” Xol answered my unspoken question. “Come.”
I walked with him, leaving the foliage behind as we approached the dark, placid lake that stretched before us. It reminded me of standing on the shore of one of the Great Lakes. There was no visible land beyond the horizon.
“Have you crossed it?” I asked, my voice almost a whisper in this quiet place. Last time we were here, he had expressed a desire to know what lay on the other side. He had told me it was the underworld.
